Orchestroniker.
Composer of contrasts.
Architect of hybrid sonic spaces.
Fabian Russ is an Orchestroniker.
His artistic focus lies in the intricate interplay between samples, electronics, and classical music – ranging from solo instruments to chamber ensembles and full-scale symphonic settings. His work combines compositional precision with technological innovation, specializing in immersive live 3D audio experiences, whether in walk-in spatial installations or through binaural headphone formats. His projects shift fluidly between concert, installation, and narrative sound art.
Russ is the founder of the registered brand Orchestronik (since 2018) and is officially listed as an ABLETON Artist by software pioneer Ableton Live. His regular collaborators include sound engineer Carlo Grippa, festival director Folkert Uhde, artistic director Steven Walter, Christian Kellersmann (Neue Meister / EDEL), Albrecht Mayer, Andreas Scholl, Midori Seiler, Robert Gwisdek (aka Captain Peng), media artist Frieder Weiss, actress Johanna Wokalek, sonic architect Alexander Hacke, American composer Paul Cantelon, and Grammy-winning 3D audio pioneer Tom Ammermann (Kraftwerk).
Russ played a pivotal role in the launch of the Neue Meister label, collaborating closely with Christian Kellersmann to shape its sonic and curatorial direction as a forward-looking classical format.
He has produced numerous radio features and audio pieces for public broadcasters and cultural institutions. Together with Carlo Grippa, he has been responsible for special projects and installations at institutions such as the Kunsthalle Hamburg, Montforthaus Vorarlberg, Kunstfest Weimar, RA/DIUM Radialsystem V Berlin, the Klangbiennale Basel with Andreas Scholl, and the Futurium Berlin.
For the VR film “Future Diaries”, which was nominated for Cannes XR 2018, Russ composed and produced the immersive 3D audio version.
A major milestone in his work is the project “Kaleidoskop der Räume” (“Kaleidoscope of Spaces”) – a four-part cycle of hybrid electronic reinterpretations of key works by Heinrich Schütz in walk-in 3D audio. Premiered in 2019 at the opening of the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival, the project concluded in 2022 – marking the 350th anniversary of Schütz’s death – with a final revision. This cycle also marked the beginning of a close, exclusive collaboration with 3D audio market leader L-Acoustics.
In the same year, Russ released the eponymous album “Kaleidoskop der Räume” on the Leipzig label in 2001 – a four-part collection totaling four hours of music, published in both stereo and binaural versions. The release serves as the conclusive, condensed sonic documentation of the full artistic process.
Together with programmer Tobias Philipp, Russ developed the app SWALK, which combines geolocation with 3D sound. Since 2019, SWALK has been a permanent fixture of the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival and has been continuously expanded to include new listening stations across central Germany.
In 2022, SWALK launched a public app for the City of Leipzig, featuring six exclusive binaural arrangements of compositions by Robert and Clara Schumann, making Leipzig’s music history accessible through sound and space.
SWALK is now an established part of Leipzig’s tourism offerings, allowing visitors to explore the city’s musical heritage in a digital and immersive format – with sound installations created in collaboration with institutions such as the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Opera Leipzig (in planning), the Thomanerchor (in planning), the Mendelssohn House, and the Bach Archive Leipzig.
Russ also contributed to the Compassion Prison Project, an international social initiative by Grammy-winner Fritzi Horstman, in collaboration with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Martin Scorsese). Together with Grammy-winner Lasse Järvi, Russ has been working on the development of new hybrid soundtrack formats. In 2022, the two supported Oscar-winner Atticus Ross in Russ’s characteristic sound language on the FX/Disney Network docuseries “Dear Mama” about the life of Tupac Shakur.
Also in 2022, Russ created the sound design for the opening of the new MINSK Museum in Potsdam, where he developed high-quality narrative audio stories in collaboration with Grimme Award-winning author and curator Sylvie Kürsten.
Two major film projects featuring Russ’s work are scheduled to premiere in May 2025:
a television production for ARTE and Bayerischer Rundfunk, realized with producer Anna Schmidt, and a feature-length documentary about the East German resistance collective Clara Mosch, developed in close collaboration with Sylvie Kürsten.
